Saliva Testing

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has approved oral fluid (saliva) testing as an alternative to urine tests for drug testing in safety-sensitive positions, but it’s not yet fully implemented. This change, effective since May 2, 2023, allows employers to choose between urine or oral fluid testing. However, oral fluid testing cannot be used until at least two laboratories are certified by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to perform it.
